We all know what security means. Now, when we add the prefix “cyber-” then, we narrow the term to the digital world. To this end, Cybersecurity ensures the complete protection of the data that resides in cyberspace and the systems that work with this data.
To reach this protection, cybersecurity seeks three complementary objectives. None of these is more important than the others, and lacking the appropriate considerations for any of them results in a lack of cybersecurity as a whole. These three objectives are: Confidentiality (of data and systems), Integrity (of data and systems) and Availability (of data and systems). From now on, the “on data and systems” clause will be omitted, but keep it in mind as if it was there.
Also note that, from now on, Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability will be referred to as The CIA Triad.
The CIA Triad
Cybersecurity, however, has another main goal of which we must not forget. This principle is called Non-Repudiation, and is responsible for helping towards authenticating identities in the digital world.
